It is Friday Eve! Ya’ll know how much I adore my weekends… this Thursday is particularly special because I have some really exciting news to share! Last Friday night, my best friend asked him to marry him and I said YES! Stick with me… this is a lengthy one 😉
B and I have been together for six years and it is no secret that I have been hoping that he would ask me the big question for a long time now! We are high school sweethearts, and after graduating from high school we both headed to the University of Oklahoma where I studied Biology and B studied Microbiology. Through the college years B was my best friend and my rock… there is no one else who I would have rather stayed up late studying with, partied hard with, and stayed in on a Friday to watch movies with. Brian really is my best friend and I still feel like it’s a dream that I get to marry him! I am planning to post about our relationship and how it progressed over the years in a few weeks.. so more on that then! For now… let’s talk about how I GET TO MARRY MY BEST FRIEND.
I would be lying to you if I didn’t tell you that I have relived this moment over and over since it happened last Friday night! The entire night was a dream… I am on cloud nine!
Many of you know that I am pursuing a Masters degree in Oklahoma, so Brian and I have been long distance for the past few months! Brian told me last week that he wanted to take me out on a special date to celebrate my being “half way done with my masters” and home for the summer! At first I was a little hesitant to agree, because I knew that Brian had been saving for a ring… and I didn’t want to take away from that money to spend on an expensive dinner when we could have just gone to Chilis (a favorite of ours) or somewhere a little less expensive. B insisted that we should go out to celebrate, and after speaking with my mom I decided to agree to the nicer dinner, because it’s fun to get dressed up and like my mom said, “you still have to live sometimes even when you’re saving”. I didn’t think that B was anywhere near being able to propose to me until August… so after being initially skeptical, I decided to remove all hope that I would potentially be engaged after this date and just focus on having fun!
The day started out like any other! As Brian and I were flying to Destin on Saturday, I had plans to take my Mom out for a Mother’s day lunch and to do some shopping on Friday (since I would be missing mother’s day). My mom and I had a great time shopping and had the yummiest lunch! Then my mom had some errands to run and Brian wanted to go to the mall to buy sunglasses before our mini vacation! If I had any hope of Brian proposing that night, it was removed when we spent four hours at the mall… if he was going to propose, surely he would have to spend time alone setting it up? Right? Little did I know… 😉
Brian and I ended up splitting up to get ready around 5:30 and B had told me that the only reservation he had been able to get at Jasper’s was for 8:15… a little late… but since Prom was that weekend I totally bought the excuse that the 8:15 reservation was the only one we could get! B picked me up around 7:30 and he looked so handsome. We have both been trying to save money and so we haven’t been going out on dates where we get really dressed up! I usually just wear a sundress or a romper and B is in shorts. When he turned up in his crisp white button down and navy pants I was blown away.. but I genuinely didn’t think anything was about to happen!
We left for dinner and for a split second again, I thought that maybe he would propose at dinner. Dinner came and went with yummy food and delicious glasses of wine… but no proposal. As we were walking back to the car I was a little bummed… but I had told myself over and over that there wouldn’t be a proposal until late in the summer and so I pushed it out of my head, determined to have a fun night with B before heading to Destin with all of our friends! We chatted on the way home and listened to music like always… we decided to go to Brian’s house to see his little nephew, Noah, before heading back to my house! This apparently worked out great for B since the proposal was (unbeknownst to me) at his house! Side note: my mom later asked B how he got me to agree to come back to his house and he said “oh just asked her if she wanted to see Noah… she never turns down baby cuddles”. LOL. True. But LOL.
When we got to Brian’s house I started to head round the back… this was when the magic started! B took me by the hand and asked me if I trusted him. Of course I said yes, and then he asked me to turn around and proceeded to blindfold me. At first I had no idea what was going on… because I really had convinced myself that we would not be getting engaged until at least the end of the summer. B then took (a blindfolded) me by the hand, and started to lead me somewhere. Immediately I tripped in my heels (that were way too tall… thankfully B caught me) and then I said “I don’t trust you anymore”! Haha. B grabbed me by the waist and told me to “shh”. That was when the music stated to play.
Let me just tell you that I have loved music all of my life.. I grew up singing and have always adored music. I have also had my wedding planned on Pinterest since I was 15 years old. Being that Brian was my best friend, I didn’t hold back on the details… like when I randomly found the song I wanted my bridesmaids to walk down the aisle to several years ago both he and my mom heard allll about it and were forced to listen to the song several times.
Brian took my blindfold off and I found myself looking at a walkway that was lined with candle-lit lanterns, and the song that I had told Brian I wanted my Bridesmaids to walk down the aisle to was playing (A thousand Years). I burst into tears (ugly, loud, sobbing tears), as Brian proceeded to lead me to the creek behind his house. All of a sudden a chandelier that was handing from a tree turned on, and I was standing in the middle of tons of pictures of Brian and I from over the years that were hanging from the tree.
Still sobbing, Brian and I looked at the pictures while he put his arm around me and I cried some more. Brian then turned me around again, and I saw hundred of fairy lights above us that were strung between all of the trees, as well as the most beautiful, rustic set up! There was a big projector screen in front of a gorgeous gold couch with a coffee table and champagne and CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRIES (I mean.. talk about romance ;))!
Brian asked me to sit down and poured me a glass of champagne. He then pressed play and a video started playing all about our relationship. *Cue more ugly crying*.
The video was 9 minutes long and started with pictures of us from high school (the very first picture that we ever took on Photo Booth [remember when photobooth photo shoots were a thing?!?] was the first picture), and all of Brian’s favorite pictures of us from homecoming, date nights, prom, high school graduation, date parties in college, holidays, college graduation… any of the big milestones that we have ever had were in that video. But that’s not all! He also had some really famous love scenes from some really famous love movies in there! The first one was an Aladdin one where he is going on about “her hair… her eyes”. There were also two scenes from the notebook and tons more. If I am being honest with you, the video is really a blur as it began to set in that Brian might really going to be asking me to marry him (either that or it was a cruel joke hahaha!). I watched, and cried, and cuddled, and watched more and cried more, and I was definitely shaking!
At the end of the video, a picture of Brian and I walking on the beach in the Dominican came on the screen as our song began to play. The next thing I knew, the love of my life was down on one knee and telling me I get to spend the rest of my life with him. It was a dream. It is a dream… I’m definitely still dreaming! I am the luckiest girl in the world that I get to marry him, I don’t think the novelty of the situation will ever wear off.
After Brian asked me the BIG question and I said YES and had more happy tears and then Brian reminded me I actually had a ring to put on my finger, he told me to turn around! Then!!!! Both of our families and a few of our favorite friends who were in town SCREAMED!!! They had all been hiding in Brian’s backyard and witnessed the WHOLE thing… *cue happy tears AGAIN!”. I was ecstatic to not only be officially able to marry my best friend… but to be surrounded by our loved ones as well! It was so much fun!
Here is where I have got to tell you how hard everyone who was in that backyard worked to help the logistics happen! My dad travels for work… a LOT. Brian had texted him and my mom a month ago in order to figure out a date that would work to take my parents out for a meal to ask for my hand (more on that ADORABLE story in a later post). After getting that part out of the way, they realized that this was one of the only dates that would work with my dad’s schedule, and I guess Brian had had this date planned for a long time! So, my dad was scheduled to fly into Houston from NYC on Friday afternoon. My little Brother just finished his Freshman year at OU and had a final on Friday afternoon before flying home to Houston that evening. If you’re starting to put two and two together, you’ll realize that Brian made our dinner reservation for so late so that my dad and brother would be able to get there on time! He also had his best friend Sheel and his girlfriend (also one of my favorite people) drive in from Baton Rouge and last but not least… he had my best friend from high school, Jill (remember her from Napa) come to the proposal as well (Jill’s Fiancé Chase was graduating from Texas ATM the next day and she went to College Station late so she could be there with us!). Brian and I are surrounded by some incredible people and we are so so blessed.
I also have to tell you about the insane amount of PLANNING that went into this phenomenal night. Brian’s Mom along with my Mom, Brian’s sister, and Brian’s awesome neighbors the Miller’s and the Adam’s all worked all week to scout out the props for the backyard and to create the dreamland that was the proposal sight. Remember when I said how on earth could I think that Brian would propose when we spent 4 hours at the mall?! It was because of all of these people!
I still can’t believe it, the proposal was more than I have ever imagined in my wildest dreams (and I have imagined it a million times). I am still truly on cloud nine and I can’t stop thinking about the fact that Brian and I can now plan a WEDDING and spend forever together!
The rest of the night was a super fun blur of picture taking, champagne drinking and indulging in yummy foods… and crying more happy tears. Brian and I feel so blessed because of all of the people in our lives.
I wish that my recounting of the story could do it justice, because it was truly the most incredible night of my life. I still just can’t believe it!!!
Thank you so much for reading, let’s plan a wedding!
